B
BOLLYWOOD

Bollywood is the informal term popularly used for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbay (formerly known as Bombay).

The term is often incorrectly used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema; it is only a part of the total Indian film industry.

The name "Bollywood" is a portmanteau derived from Bombay (the former name for Mumbai) and Hollywood, the center of the American film industry. However, unlike Hollywood, Bollywood does not exist as a physical place.

Following India's independence, the period from the late 1940s to the 1960s is regarded by film historians as the "Golden Age" of Hindi cinema. Some of the most critically acclaimed Hindi films of all times were produced during this period.

Indian popular cinema has been influenced mainly by six different styles:

  • The ancient Indian epics;
  • Ancient Sanskit drama, with music, dance and gesture combined "to create a vibrant artistic unit with dance and mime being central to the dramatic experience."
  • The traditional folk theatre of India;
  • The Parsi theatre;
  • Hollywood;
  • Western musical television.

The influence of Bollywood film music can be seen in popular music elsewhere in the world.

SONG AND DANCE

Songs from Bollywood movies are generally pre-recorded by professional playback singers, with the actors then lipsynching the words to the song on-screen, often while dancing. While most actors, especially today, are excellent dancers, few are also singers.

This is the famous song of bollywood film " Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...":
